OUR NEW, TEMPORARY NORMAL

During this strange time in our world, we are finding ourselves working from home, teaching our kids from home, and somehow trying to be productive…..from home. Putting the worries and anxieties aside, we must move forward and help our kids, our companies, our jobs, and ourselves by finding a new normal.
What does that look like for you?
Not all of us have a dedicated “home office”. Not all of our kids have their own rooms or own workspaces. In times like these we have to get creative.
Here are some tips to help you with your new normal!
Really think about the best place to set up shop. You don’t want to be staring at 5 loads of laundry that are waiting to be folded or the lunch mess the kids left out. If possible, set up your space away from the chaos and near a window. Natural light makes us all happier. If natural light is not an option, make sure you have good lighting in the room you are using. Set up a light if needed and replace any burnt-out lightbulbs.
Since we do not know how long this new normal may last, be mindful of where you set up shop. Your dining room table might not be the best place to work, especially since we will all be eating in more and having more family dinners.
Find a way to make your space functional. You may need to think outside of the box on this and be creative in finding ways to use what you already have in your house that won’t require you to go shopping. An unused basket to hold papers, Tupperware containers to hold your pens, etc. Function is important, but right now it is also important to set up a space that brings you some kind of peace or joy. This can be true whether you are setting up a card table in the corner of your bedroom or using half the dining room table. Just like your work office, add a picture or kids’ artwork pieces that make you smile when you look at them.
Besides the essentials - (laptop, phone, chargers), add a plant, some note paper, or a picture that brings back a fond memory. Whatever it is - add a couple little things that make you feel good.
Use only your dedicated area when you need to be productive. It will help you separate the work from home responsibilities.
If music, candles, essential oils help you focus, then break them out!
Make sure to give yourself breaks! Stand up, walk around, and stretch at least every hour. These breaks are important always, but especially important during these times of high stress!
For the kids think along the same lines.
Have them help set up an area where they will do their school work. Letting them have a say is always a great way to help them feel responsible.
If your child stays more focused with music on, let them listen. If they need to run around in between each subject, let them. Crunchy snacks, yoga breaks, and patience is needed. Let’s remember, this time is just as different and crazy for them as it is for us. There are tons of great schedules, activities, and free resources being posted online on the daily right now. Meditation and deep breathing exercises are also great ways to give breaks and refocus ALL of our minds.
If space allows, let them keep this space set up for daily work. If not, have them clean up and put things away so tomorrow can be a fresh start.
Separate kids (if space allows) to help eliminate fighting!
These are trying times, guys. There is no right or wrong way to go about this. We are all trying to figure things out, and it seems things are changing constantly. Stay calm and chances are your kids will stay calm. Undoubtedly, our patience is going to be tested...and tested again...and again. Do what works best for you and for your family! We are all in this together and just trying to ease the new day-to-day.
