Mosaic knitting: The Shift Cowl
ABOUT THE CLASS:
If you have been wanting to learn a new stitch technique with mosaic knitting, this is a great project to add to your new skills. Join Nicholene, fiber artist of Woolen Violet, to learn how to get started knitting the 'Shift' cowl, designed by Andrea Mowry. Andrea is a well known knitting designer with many beautiful modern knit wear patterns. The mosaic stitch is an engaging and fun colorwork technique, using 2 colors at a time to create a unique, geometric shape. You will learn slip stich knitting with many yarn colors, which results in a striped pattern. The contrast colors also create a unique texture, in an asymmetrical triangular shape. Two of the sides get sewed up after binding off to create a cowl. A perfect accessory to complete your stylish outfit!
In class we will get started knitting the mosaic pattern, with an I cord edge. We will not finish the entire project in class, but the plan is to have your knit started with the tools to continue and finish later on.
Techniques used in this design, per pattern details: mosaic knitting, bias shaping, I-cord edges, slipping stitches, mattress stitch, increasing, and decreasing.
Learning mosaic knitting can motivate you to get started knitting several more of Andrea's designs: the Nightshift Shawl, Shifty sweater and Shiftalong hat. Her work can be found here. Plus there are many more designers and beautiful patterns out there! Knitting has been shown to decrease stress and can be a soothing balm for the heart.
STUDENTS WILL TAKE HOME:
